Choosing the Best
Choosing good breeding stock which guarantee quality and profitability for its clientes is the principal objective at Suinosul. Through the Genetic Improvement Program the company achieves constant improvement within its herds with selection methods which utilise the best technology available.
Each week, all animals in the nucleus herds which reach the age of 20 weeks undergo the selection process. After weighing and measuring their back-fat and loin depth in two positions, all the data is processed using the computer program PigBLUP®.
This program evaluates the genetic quality of each animal, taking into consideration its own data, and also all the accumulated data on its blood relatives. In this way, the program generates a precise prediction of the genetic potential of the animal, for the traits of: daily weight gain, carcass quality and prolificacy.
The physical production estimates are combined into a single financial index, which shows the animal´s degree of superiority. Those animals with the highest indexes are kept as replacements for the nucleus herds, which guarantees that the quality of these herds increases continuously.
